Overview

Sri Lankan cuisine is one of the world's great undiscovered food traditions, and this full-day culinary tour gives you a deep, hands-on introduction to its vibrant flavors. From bustling morning markets to fragrant spice gardens and a traditional home kitchen, you'll discover the ingredients, techniques, and stories behind the island's most beloved dishes. Your day starts at a lively local market where your guide and host chef will help you select the freshest produce, aromatic spices, and hand-scraped coconut that form the foundation of every Sri Lankan meal. You'll learn how to identify different curry leaves, pick the ripest mangoes, and bargain like a local at the fish stalls. Back at a traditional home kitchen, roll up your sleeves and learn to prepare a full Sri Lankan rice and curry spread, including dhal, a fragrant chicken or fish curry, coconut sambol, and crispy papadums. The tour concludes with a visit to a nearby spice garden where cinnamon, pepper, cloves, and cardamom grow in abundance, followed by a soothing cup of freshly brewed Ceylon tea.

What the day looks like

  1. Morning: Market Visit & Ingredient Shopping

After pickup at 8:00 AM, head to a vibrant local market where vendors display towers of tropical fruit, gleaming fresh fish, and sacks of fragrant spices. Your host chef will guide you through the stalls, explaining key ingredients and helping you select everything needed for the day's cooking. Sample exotic fruits like rambutan and wood apple along the way.

  2. Late Morning: Cooking Class

Arrive at a welcoming family home set among coconut palms. Your cooking class begins with learning to crack and scrape fresh coconut, the cornerstone of Sri Lankan cooking. Then prepare a full meal including creamy dhal curry, a rich chicken or fish curry with roasted spice paste, tangy pol sambol, and fluffy steamed rice. Your host shares family recipes passed down through generations.

  3. Midday: Feast on Your Creations

Sit down to enjoy the delicious meal you have prepared, served on a traditional banana leaf. Your host will explain the art of eating with your hands and the customary way dishes are arranged. Take home a printed recipe booklet so you can recreate these flavors in your own kitchen.

  4. Afternoon: Spice Garden & Tea Tasting

After lunch, visit a nearby spice garden where cinnamon bark is peeled by hand, pepper vines climb tall trees, and vanilla orchids bloom in the shade. Learn about the medicinal and culinary uses of each spice. End the day with a relaxing Ceylon tea tasting before returning to your hotel by approximately 4:00 PM.
